Application period

June 28, 2019 to September 19, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. (noon) Eastern time.

We anticipate that projects could start as early as Winter 2020.

Description of funding

You can apply for up to $300,000 in contribution funding per year, for projects up to 36 months in duration. These projects have to focus on fostering partnerships, innovation and addressing data/research gaps in Canada.

Eligible organizations may submit only one application for funding in this process.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Funding Program supports projects that aim to:

• build awareness of the 2030 Agenda
• increase partnerships and networks
• advance research, and
• further Canada's implementation of the 2030 Agenda

You may also apply for a grant project that focusses on engaging and raising awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of our ongoing call for proposals launched in May 2019.

Objectives

We are funding projects that will identify and implement new and innovative approaches or increase impact of existing activities in order to work towards achieving 1 or more of the following objectives:

• Identify and address gaps in knowledge and/or data to support Canada's efforts to meet the SDGs
• Enhance collaboration between various sectors to explore new technologies and foster innovation and investment for the SDGs
• Create resources to enhance and share knowledge on the SDGs including the contribution of Indigenous knowledge and practices in relation to advancing sustainable development
• Establish accountability frameworks to support impact measurement and demonstrate SDG progress

Your application clearly demonstrates how it will:

• advance the 2030 Agenda as a whole, or multiple SDGs. (projects targeting only one SDG will not be eligible for funding

Eligibility

To apply, you must meet all the following eligibility criteria. Otherwise, your application will not be further considered.

• Your application is submitted on or before September 19, 2019, 12:00 p.m. (noon) Eastern time
• Your organization is:
  • a non-profit organization
  • an Indigenous organization (including band council, tribal council and self-government entity)
  • an international organization
  • a coalition, network and committee
  • a research organization and institute
  • an educational institution
  • a public health and social services institution, or
  • a for-profit organization
• Your project does not exceed 36 months in duration
• The funding amount you are requesting does not exceed $300,000 per year
• Your application clearly demonstrates how it will:
  • identify and implement new innovative approaches for advancing Canada's progress on the 2030 Agenda
  • increase the impact of existing activities that support Canada's implementation of the 2030 Agenda; and/or
  • advance the 2030 Agenda as a whole, or multiple SDGs. (projects targeting only one SDG will not be eligible for funding

Note to organizations located and operating in Québec:

Act respecting the Ministère du Conseil exécutif, The Québec National Assembly adopted an Act respecting the Ministère du Conseil exécutif (RLRQ, chapter M-30). This Act provides, in particular, that all Québec public bodies must obtain the authorization of the Québec government before entering into any agreement with the federal government, one of its departments or government agencies, or with a federal public agency. Any entity that is subject to the Act is responsible for obtaining the necessary authorization prior to the conclusion of such an agreement. If your proposed project is successful, ESDC will allow a reasonable amount of time for you to obtain the authorization from the Government of Québec. If you are unable to obtain the required authorization in a reasonable amount of time, your application could be withdrawn.

How we assess your application

We will assess your application based on the following criteria:

1. Project objectives (refer to Question 43 of the Applicant guide)
   • Your application clearly demonstrates how your organization will work towards achieving 1 or more of the following objectives:
     • identify and address gaps in knowledge and/or data to support Canada's efforts to meet the SDGs
     • enhance collaboration between various sectors to explore new technologies and foster innovation and investment for the SDGs
     • create resources to enhance and share knowledge on the SDGs including the contribution of Indigenous knowledge and practices in relation to advancing sustainable development
     • establish accountability frameworks to support impact measurement and demonstrate SDG progress
   • Your application clearly demonstrates how it will:
     • advance the 2030 Agenda as a whole, or multiple SDGs. (projects targeting only one SDG will not be eligible for funding
2. Innovative and Impact (refer to Question 44 of the Applicant guide)
   • Your application clearly demonstrates how your organization will:
     • identify and implement new innovative approaches for advancing Canada's progress on the 2030 Agenda, or
     • increase the impact of existing activities that support Canada's implementation of the 2030 Agenda
3. Project activities, timelines and feasibility (refer to Question 44 of the Applicant guide)
   • Your application clearly describes each activity
   • Your project activities are specific, measurable and realistic
   • Your project activities are relevant to the project objectives. They support the achievement of the project outcomes
   • Your project timelines are clear and feasible
4. Project measurement (refer to Question 45 and 46 of the Applicant guide)
   • Your application must focus on 1 or more of the following project outcomes:
     • the identification of gaps to meet the SDGs and approaches to address them
     • the implementation of innovative approaches that drive progress on more than one SDG
     • the integration of Indigenous and local knowledge into approaches to achieve the 2030 Agenda, and
     • the development of new ways to measure the impact of the SDGs indicators
   • Your application includes potential results measurement Indicators
   • Your application describes how you intend to measure and report on each individual result indicator you have identified
5. Project budget (refer to Section B, Part 3)
   • Your project costs are reasonable, detailed and support the project activities

An information session will be held during the first 4 weeks of the intake period. Another information session will be held in late August, 2019.
