Canadian Benefit for Parents of Young Victims of Crime
What these benefits offer

The death or disappearance of a child is devastating and can leave parents unable to work. If you are a parent or legal guardian who consider to/or have taken time away from work and suffered a loss of income to cope with the death or disappearance of your child or children, you may be eligible for federal income support.
The benefit provides eligible parents with payments of $500 per week, paid every 2 weeks, for a maximum of 35 weeks over a period of 3 years.
You can decide to stop receiving the benefit at any time and restart receipt of the benefit at a later date within the 3 years following the incident.
You can share the weeks with other eligible recipients.
Updates to benefit criteria
Please note, as of April 2nd 2023, the following enhancements have taken effect:
- the weekly benefit amount was increased from $450 to $500
- the period in which recipients can receive the benefit was extended from 2 years to 3 years
- the earnings threshold is being lowered from $6,500 to $5,000
- the criteria “a willing party to the crime” is being eliminated for children 14 years of age and older
Information for employers
To apply for the benefit, applicants must submit an employment form completed and signed by their recent employers. As the applicant's employer, it is your responsibility to complete this form to confirm that your employee has stopped working full-time and that their earnings were at least $5,000 in the previous calendar year, or in the 52 weeks before the incident.

Information for law enforcement agencies
To apply for the benefit, applicants must submit an incident report form. The Law Enforcement Agency where the incident was reported must complete this form on behalf of the applicant.
